Linux Technical Consultant

Essential Energy - Remote (WFM)

Linux technical consultant for a major platform migration project – (AIX to Linux). 
Tasks:
  • Analysis and technical audit of Perl/Bash scripts developed in-house to support the enterprise application at the heart of the platform migration. 
  • Implementation of Source Code Management (Git) for the ongoing management of the application support scripts. 
  • From the script audit, updated scripts where changes specific to the platform (AIX to Linux) were required, along with scripts identified to improve their management going forward on the new Linux platform.
  • Identified additional software and libraries for inclusion on the new Linux platform to support the migrated scripts.
  • Involved in the testing of migrated scripts in readiness for go-live.
Achievements:
  • Through the script audit, reduce the list of scripts in scope from approx 10,000 to under 1,000, saving time and effort in the management of the scripts
  • Introducing industry best practices of source code management with the implementation of Git (and in-house hosted Gitlab), improving efficiency in management of in-house developed scripts

Senior Linux Systems Administrator

University of Tasmania - Hobart, TAS

Mixed roles covering Linux System Administration and Mac / Mac OS Support and Administration in a University environment.
Tasks:
  • Analysis of legacy “in-house” developed systems (Linux / Mac OS / Shell Scripting and Java) for the School of ICT and managing their upgrading / replacement where required.
  • 3rd-level Mac OS and Linux support to the School of Information Technology.
  • Administration of core University Linux Systems in a BAU capacity.
  • New Red Hat Linux server builds (virtualised, VMware platform) using Red Hat Satellite / Puppet automation.
Achievements:
  • Conceived and instrumental in implementing remote Apple Mac teaching labs for UTAS School of ICT during Covid lockdowns in 2021 to allow teaching to continue during a 6 month period of lockdown (no onsite teaching)
  • Modernisation of legacy systems:
  • Implementation of new (Red Hat), managed in VMware environment School of ICT teach Linux server, resulting in improved reliability, security, and updated software forming a major component of the school’s student teaching resource
  • Redesign and implementation of software deployment to School of ICT Apple Mac computing labs, resulting in improved reliability (less downtime) and methods to deploy up-to-date teaching resources in a more timely manner.
  • Providing timely support of the university’s Linux server infrastructure as part of BAU requirements.
